As a family photographer, I know how important it is to capture moments that truly reflect your family’s unique connections. Choosing the right photographer is about more than just pretty pictures—it’s about finding someone who understands how to work with families, keep kids engaged, and create a relaxed environment for genuine interactions.
Not all photographers have experience working with kids and families, and that experience makes all the difference! Photographing families outdoors means working with unpredictable elements—moving toddlers, changing light, and varying energy levels. A great family photographer knows how to adapt and bring out natural, authentic smiles, even from the most camera-shy little ones.
Every photographer has a unique style. Some focus on classic, posed portraits, while others (like me!) blend traditional poses with lifestyle photography—capturing natural interactions, laughter, and candid moments. When browsing a photographer’s portfolio, ask yourself:
✔ Do I like their editing style? (Light and airy, true to life, or dark and moody?)
✔ Do their images feel authentic and relaxed?
✔ Do they capture genuine emotions, not just posed smiles?
Your photos should reflect your family’s energy, whether that means playful action shots or a more peaceful, intimate feel.
Since I exclusively shoot family sessions outdoors, I always recommend choosing locations that feel comfortable and meaningful to you. Whether it’s a scenic park, a golden field at sunset, or a quiet lakeside spot, outdoor photography allows for natural movement, beautiful lighting, and a relaxed atmosphere.
I love helping families find locations that not only look stunning but also allow kids to run, play, and be themselves—because that’s where the best moments happen.
I’ve worked with children my entire life, with a background in early childhood education, so I know that every child is different. Some kids warm up quickly, while others take time to feel comfortable. Whether your child is shy, energetic, or just not in the mood for photos, I have the experience and patience to bring out their best moments without forcing anything.
If you’re worried about your child being too “difficult” for a photoshoot—don’t be! I have plenty of tricks up my sleeve to keep kids engaged while ensuring a stress-free experience for parents.
Once you’ve chosen your photographer, a little preparation goes a long way in making the session run smoothly.
✔ Choose Coordinating (Not Matching) Outfits – Neutral or earthy tones work beautifully in outdoor settings, and soft fabrics help kids feel comfortable. Avoid large logos or distracting patterns. Check out my pinterest family “What to Wear” guide here.
✔ Plan for Golden Hour – The best time for outdoor photos is usually the hour before sunset, when the light is soft and flattering. This ensures warm, glowing images.
✔ Keep It Fun – The best family photos come from natural interactions. Play with your kids, snuggle, laugh—those little moments make for the most meaningful images.
I believe that family photos should be a mix of posed portraits and candid, natural interactions. I’ll guide you into flattering poses while also capturing those in-between moments—the giggles, the way your child holds your hand, the laughter that happens when everyone is truly enjoying the moment.
If you’re looking for a relaxed, outdoor family photography experience with someone who truly understands how to work with kids (even the most strong-willed ones!), I’d love to capture your family’s story.
